Pakistan, India’s floods claim lives of seventy-three people

(MENAFN) Severe monsoon rains and flash floods have led to the deaths of at least 73 people across Pakistan and India, with authorities warning that the hazardous weather is expected to persist in several regions.

In Pakistan, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reported that at least 63 individuals have died and over 100 have been injured in weather-related incidents since June 26. The NDMA's latest update noted that six deaths and 14 injuries occurred in just the past 24 hours.

Breaking down the casualties, the agency reported 21 fatalities—including 11 children—in Punjab province; 22 deaths, including 10 children and five women, in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa; 15 deaths in Sindh; and five in Balochistan.

The ongoing rains have caused significant damage to infrastructure, disrupting travel and communications, especially in vulnerable low-lying and mountainous areas. Authorities expect scattered rainfall to continue in the coming days.

Across the border in northern India, flash floods and cloudbursts in Himachal Pradesh state have killed 10 people, with 34 others still unaccounted for, according to a statement from the Emergency Operations Centre.

Rescue teams have managed to evacuate more than 350 individuals from affected zones within the past 32 hours. The region experienced 16 cloudbursts and three separate flash flood incidents.

The monsoon season, known for its heavy downpours, typically runs from June to September in both countries.
