Media reports top Modi counselor goes to Moscow for high-level discussions

(MENAFN) Ajit Doval, India’s National Security Adviser, is set to visit Russia this week for high-level discussions on defense and security, according to The Times of India. His agenda reportedly includes talks on acquiring additional S-400 air defense missile systems. India has already received three of the five S-400 units ordered from Russia, which were recently deployed during a brief military flare-up with Pakistan.

Though Doval’s trip was scheduled in advance, it has gained increased relevance following sharp criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump over India’s continued oil imports from Russia. Trump accused India of profiting from reselling Russian oil while ignoring the ongoing war in Ukraine.

India dismissed these accusations, noting that Washington had initially encouraged the imports to help stabilize global energy markets. “India will always act in its national interest and economic security,” said Foreign Ministry spokesman Randhir Jasiwal, calling Trump’s comments “unjustified and unreasonable.”

Trump has previously threatened steep 100% tariffs on countries continuing trade with Russia unless Moscow agrees to a peace settlement with Ukraine.

Responding to these remarks, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov condemned such threats, emphasizing that sovereign nations like India have the right to choose their own economic partners without external pressure.

In addition to Doval’s visit, Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar is also expected to travel to Russia later this month for further diplomatic engagements.
